The granary weevil is the flightless cousin of the rice weevil, spreading only by crawling and by riding along in infested grain.

Because it cannot fly, the granary weevil spreads more slowly than the rice weevil, but it develops the same way inside the kernels, so finding the source is still the key to clearing it.

Signs You Have Granary Weevils

Granary weevils turn up in stored whole grain:

• Snout-nosed dark beetles in or around wheat, barley, oats, and corn.
• Beetles crawling on pantry shelves near grain, but not flying.
• Grain that looks powdery or has exit holes in the kernels.
• Larvae hidden inside kernels, not visible until they emerge.
• A slowly spreading problem confined to grain products.

Are Granary Weevils Dangerous?

Granary weevils are not a health threat. They do not bite, sting, or spread disease. The harm they do is to stored grain.

They contaminate and ruin wheat, barley, oats, and other whole grains. Because they cannot fly, an infestation tends to stay closer to the source, but the affected grain should still be discarded. The weevils pose no danger beyond the loss.
