German cockroaches are the most consequential roach for indoor health. They are a leading indoor allergen, and their droppings, saliva, and shed skins build up and trigger asthma, especially in children. The EPA lists cockroaches among the top indoor asthma triggers.

They also crawl through drains, garbage, and grease and then across counters, dishes, and food, spreading bacteria like Salmonella and E. coli. They do not bite or sting, so the danger is the allergen load and contamination on the surfaces where food is prepared.
