Keeping Pests at Bay as the Weather Warms Up

texas state capitol

Many parts of the country have seen inclement weather over the past month or so, and Texas is no exception. The state has seen cold temperatures, rain, and even snow.

Many people are sick of this weather and ready for spring and warmer temperatures. However, there is one major downside to warm weather: pests. Just like you, pests enjoy the rise in temperatures. This is due to several main reasons. First, mosquitoes are able to emerge from the water and complete their cycle once the weather warms up. Ants can move above ground. Plus, the food supply increases. This is why you see more bugs once spring arrives.

So how can you prevent a pest infestation as you attempt to enjoy the spring and summer months? Here are some tips to keep in mind.

Clean Up

One of the most effective things you can do to keep pests at bay is to keep your home clean. Pests such as ants, spiders, cockroaches, and rodents love trash and clutter. Even a few crumbs on the kitchen counter or floor can attract insects, so make sure you are proactive and keep your home free of debris, food, and anything else that can attract annoying critters. Wipe down counters and sweep floors. Keep food in tightly closed containers and empty trash often.

Outdoors, keep the lawn mowed and hedges trimmed. You should also get rid of any standing water to keep mosquitoes out.

Close Up Spaces

Pests are always looking for a way to get in your home. They’ll try to come in through doors, windows, cracks, and holes in your home. Therefore, you need to assess the outside of your home and do damage control before you get an infestation. You can do this by caulking around window frames, plumbing pipes, and air conditioning units. Look for gaps in siding and cracks in mortar. You can also keep bugs out by installing door sweeps at thresholds and using fine mesh screens in windows.

Properly Store Firewood

Termites love all wood, including firewood. So keep firewood away from your home! The further away, the better, but aim for at least 5 feet. Also, keep it on racks so it’s not resting on the ground.

Repel Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes can quickly ruin an outdoor party. Try citronella and lemon balm candles and scents to get rid of these annoying pests. If that doesn’t work, adding an oscillating fan can give the scents extra power and blow the bugs away.
